‘The Hairdresser Walk’ (thanks Andy)

This week we were blessed with an old long lost friend joining us (Julian), its been a while and I hoped his flea bitten legs remembered how to work.

The day started well, nice and sunny however became a bit overcast and windy on the tops so additional layers were required. This walk has a steep uphill start, but once on the Moss, the views

of surrounding areas were incredible and clear. We walked over the Moss to Black Edge where I was expecting a lovely view of Buxton, but was disappointed with just Doveholes and the quarry.

The wind was quite biting at the top but we found an abandoned sheep hide to have pie time.

Thankfully Julian found a spoon and wasn’t forced to eat his soup with his fingers.

The descent off the Moss was quite steep, 1:1 in places and certainly tested those with dodgy knees/operations. Once down a quick walk back on the road and we were back at the pub to be joined by Jock, Kieran and Milly.

Next week’s walk will be led by Dean, Start time and location to be confirmed (check Whattsapp) but ending at the Club in Hayfield (near Colosseo’s) approx 2.00pm

NEW MILLS LEISURE CENTRE, TORRS RIVERSIDE PARK, PEAK FOREST CANAL,GREENSHALL LANE,CORKSLANE,LONG LANE , GREEN LANE,LYMEPARK, DISLEY, GOYT VALLEY WAY, MILLENIUM WALKWAY

Weather: Dry Occasionally Sunny, absolutely no rain.

Due to the threat of rain and several members with jobs to do on returning from holidays our numbers were reduced to a not unreasonable six, who enjoyed the mild sunny weather with a pleasant breeze in generally t-shirt temperatures.

Starting at New Mills Leisure Centre we descended steps from the car park turned right through the road tunnel emerging into the Torr’s Riverside Park where shortly we came across the small hydroelectric community scheme. 

Following through the park towards a small climb to the Peak Forest Canal, we passed under the Hayfield Road supported by a Leat and another viaduct for the railway, unlike in January the River Goyt was at low levels slightly  higher than the previous months due to the recent storms.

 

Once on the Peak Forest canal path we passed by New Mills marina and Swizzels again we passed the  large group of female joggers   just past Swizzelsthis time. We exited at bridge 27 onto Greenshalllane crossing the A6 just continue upwards to Corks lane where Greg was unimpressed with the view to my house.

We climbed Buxton Old Road and then crossed the road after 400 yards taking a bridle path onto Longlane and Green lane past the Dog boarding kennels and on to Somosa time at the next Stile

Shortly after and into Lyme Park through the East Lodge gate where a few yards later we came across….

As before we also came across Jock and Millie taking the alternative route through Lyme Park to the Dandy Cock.

Passing by Lyme Cage we exited the park continuing up Red Lane into Disley town and the Dandy Cock where we met Jock in the exciting new Dandy Cock beer garden just by the bus stop- a small hedge separating us from the fumes of passing trucks on the A6. Dizzy Blonde was now 50p dearer than January at £4.70 a pint.

On leaving the pub we continued back along the Peak Forest canal until turning left over the railway bridge  where a rotten step collapsed  under my weight fortunately damage done only to the step. We continued down Waterside wood saying hello to the solitary Cormorant and onto Mousley Bottom along the side of the Goyt again. United Utilities blocked direct passage back to the leisure centre but a slight detour got us back on track over the Millennium bridge and through the Torrs to the cars.

Mark and Dean will be leading next week from the Royal car park in Hayfield at 9:45 over the Dragons Back and drinks at the Hayfield Club – if I can get a lift to Hayfield it will be my Birthday round.
