This took us to Lord Vernon’s Wharf at Higher Poynton (133mins). We are indebted to Mr Barrett for the information that the word “wharf” is an acronym derived from the words “Wares House at River Front.” You never stop learning when you’re a Wednesday Wanderer.#
(Sadly this is incorrect. True origin: The word comes from the Old English noun hwearf, which meant an embankment, shore, bank, or dam. It traces back more than a thousand years to a Germanic root (*hwarfaz), long before forming words out of initials became a practice in the English language.) Ed.
